What is bioimpedance analysis?

BIA was developed to provide a fast and effective method for measuring body composition using modern technical means. It is ideal for use in the medical and clinical field, but also for preventive health care and fitness.

Measuring body fluids is the most accurate method for determining body composition. The percentage of body fat, muscle mass and body water is determined. The analysis is used to record the actual condition in order to define certain measures for weight loss, weight gain or muscle growth.

Regardless of total weight, the proportion of fat-free and adipose tissue must remain within a recommended guideline range if all the health problems associated with "obesity" are to be avoided. These include high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels as well as arteriosclerosis, coronary artery disease, respiratory problems and kidney disease.

Just as serious, however, is the problem of too little fat in the body, because fatty tissue is crucial for normal organ function. This affects patients suffering from anorexia and bulimia.

Therefore, fat weight, NOT total weight, determines health risks and must be measured for a balanced body composition.

Who should do a BIA?

  • Bioimpedance analysis is an excellent method for monitoring long-term changes in an individual's body composition.

  • The measurement should be used to accompany any change in diet, to monitor weight loss in eating disorders and tumor diseases.

  • Athletes should be regularly monitored using BIA in order to guarantee the preservation of muscle mass and thus maintain performance.

  • The test is not suitable for women in the first weeks of pregnancy or for patients with pacemakers.

Treatment procedure

On the day of the measurement, coffee, tea, alcohol and strenuous exercise should be avoided. The measurement is taken lying on your back with Bodystat 1500, a hand-held measuring device. Electrodes are attached to the hand and foot of the right side of the body and after about 10 minutes, which the body fluids need to stabilize after the change from the standing to the lying position, the measurement can be taken. The treatment takes about 20 minutes.
