Late acne or acne tarda occurs more frequently in women, but also in men, from the age of 25 to 50. Many women are affected by late acne during the menopause.
The chin, cheeks and neck area are usually affected. Very often painful, inflammatory lumps (not blackheads) appear. The skin tends to be dry.
The main trigger is increased activity of the sebaceous glands due to a hormonal shift. Acne typically develops after stopping hormonal contraception (the pill) during or after pregnancy. Using too many or the "wrong" skin care products can also lead to acne in adulthood.
Treatments & therapies for late acne
Acne Tarda is stubborn, but there are effective treatment options that can be used to successfully treat late acne.
The local application of anti-inflammatory and antibacterial substances, supplemented by appropriate cleansing, is often sufficient. This therapy usually achieves a significant improvement.
