Treatment at JUVENIS in Vienna

Lactose intolerance, fructose intolerance and histamine intolerance

Lactose intolerance, fructose intolerance and histamine intolerance: "When the stomach pinches."

But what are lactose intolerance and fructose malabsorption? Around half of the energy we consume every day comes from carbohydrates. The most important sugars in our diet are

  • GLUCOSE (dextrose)

  • FRUCTOSE (fructose)

  • LACTOSE (lactose) = glucose + galactose

The various sugars have to be broken down in the small intestine and then transported through the wall of the small intestine into the bloodstream by means of a transport mechanism.

If one of these mechanisms does not work, the sugar cannot be absorbed and subsequently reaches the large intestine, where it is metabolized by the intestinal bacteria located there.

The result:

  • Hydrogen (H2): is exhaled via the lungs

  • Carbon dioxide: causes massive flatulence

  • Short-chain fatty acids: can cause diarrhea

  • Alcohols: stress the liver and brain

Treatments & therapies

When should you consider the possibility of sugar intolerance?

If you suffer from bloating, flatulence, abdominal pain, which is often accompanied by colicky cramps, and diarrhea.

The symptoms often occur very quickly after eating and are therefore a considerable burden for those affected. The digestive tract disorders, which often go unrecognized for a long time, become chronic and then lead to depression, migraines and menstrual cycle disorders.

Lactose intolerance Fructose intolerance Histamine intolerance - what can you do?

  1. H2 breath test: A non-invasive way to confirm the diagnosis
  2. Nutritional counseling: subsequently after diagnosis of a carbohydrate utilization disorder

Aims of the treatment

The aim of any therapy is to restore a functioning intestinal mucosa with the correct bacterial lawn. To achieve this, fermentation must be stopped.

Our nutritionist Dr. Daniela Themmer will draw up a diet plan for you depending on your intolerance, which must be adhered to for at least 2 months.
Once the intestinal mucosa has recovered after 8 weeks, a controlled transition to a normal diet is started.

The feeling of well-being during and after the diet makes many things easier. Patients often instinctively give up many products afterwards because they no longer feel bloated, full, have no diarrhea and no discomfort after eating.

Treatment procedure

  • The day before the examination, you should not eat any food that causes flatulence or is high in sugar or sweeteners.

  • Do not eat anything from 14 hours before the test.

  • Tap water and unsweetened tea are permitted until 11 pm. Smoking and chewing gum should be stopped 12 hours before the start of the test.

  • Stay fasting on the day of the examination! With the exception of vitamins, laxatives and antibiotics, medication can be taken with pure water.

  • In the consultation, you will drink the sugar solution to be tested. Your exhaled air will then be measured at regular intervals for about 2 hours by blowing into a measuring device.

  • If possible, you should not have any more appointments on the test day.
