Lactose intolerance, fructose intolerance and histamine intolerance: "When the stomach pinches."
But what are lactose intolerance and fructose malabsorption? Around half of the energy we consume every day comes from carbohydrates. The most important sugars in our diet are
The various sugars have to be broken down in the small intestine and then transported through the wall of the small intestine into the bloodstream by means of a transport mechanism.
If one of these mechanisms does not work, the sugar cannot be absorbed and subsequently reaches the large intestine, where it is metabolized by the intestinal bacteria located there.

Aims of the treatment
The aim of any therapy is to restore a functioning intestinal mucosa with the correct bacterial lawn. To achieve this, fermentation must be stopped.
Our nutritionist Dr. Daniela Themmer will draw up a diet plan for you depending on your intolerance, which must be adhered to for at least 2 months.
Once the intestinal mucosa has recovered after 8 weeks, a controlled transition to a normal diet is started.
The feeling of well-being during and after the diet makes many things easier. Patients often instinctively give up many products afterwards because they no longer feel bloated, full, have no diarrhea and no discomfort after eating.

FAQs
In the case of a food intolerance, the body is unable to properly process certain substances (such as lactose or fructose). An allergy, on the other hand, is a reaction of the immune system to certain substances. The symptoms may be similar, but the causes are different.
People with lactose intolerance lack the enzyme lactase, which breaks down milk sugar (lactose). As a result, consuming dairy products can lead to symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, or diarrhea.
In cases of fructose intolerance, the body is unable to properly absorb fructose in the intestines. This leads to digestive problems such as bloating, abdominal pain, or diarrhea.
In cases of histamine intolerance, the body does not break down histamine effectively. This can lead to symptoms such as headaches, skin reactions, gastrointestinal discomfort, or heart palpitations.
Common complaints include:
Bloating and abdominal pain
Diarrhea or digestive problems
Nausea
Headache
Skin reactions
Symptoms usually appear after eating certain foods.
The diagnosis is made by:
detailed medical history
specific breath tests (e.g., H₂ breath test)
blood tests, if necessary
targeted nutritional analysis
First, we will conduct a thorough assessment of your symptoms. We will then perform the appropriate tests and develop a personalized treatment plan.
The treatment is usually based on:
Adjusting Your Diet
Avoiding trigger foods
enzyme supplements (if necessary, e.g., for lactose intolerance)
personalized consultation
The goal is to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.
Many food intolerances cannot be completely cured, but they can be managed very effectively with the right diet.
Helpful steps include:
Keeping a food diary
conscious food choices
Gradual testing of compatibility
professional nutrition counseling
The cost depends on the scope of the diagnostic tests and treatment. An H2 breath test, including a detailed discussion of the results (duration: 2.5 hours), starts at €180.
You can get the exact prices during a personal consultation.
