JUVENIS treatment for psoriasis

Psoriasis treatment in Vienna

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease that is caused by a malfunction of the body's immune system. In those affected (approx. 2% of the world's population), the skin renews itself eight times faster than normal. The immune cells are over-activated and release inflammatory factors in the skin, resulting in scaly, red, sharply defined areas and itching.

Through years of research into treatment options for psoriasis, Prof. Dr. Tamara Kopp and Dr. Christine Bangert are considered psoriasis experts and have even been awarded the Heinrich Auspitz Prize.

Due to the severe itching and the visually unattractive affected areas of skin, this disease also causes psychological distress, which can lead to depression.

Treatments & therapies for psoriasis

What medical treatment options are available for psoriasis?

Although psoriasis cannot be cured, there are already several ways to significantly reduce the symptoms. Good skin care products in the form of moisturizing creams, ointments and lotions can improve the condition of the skin and prolong the period without symptoms.

There are various treatment options depending on the degree of severity:

  • Topical treatments (local therapies)

They are usually the first step in psoriasis treatment. These include various ointments and creams containing urea and cortisone, vitamin D preparations as well as combined products containing vitamin D and cortisone.

  • Light therapies (UV irradiation)

Exposing the skin to UV light (natural or artificial) has an immunomodulating effect and reduces the unusually fast rate of cell division of skin cells that is typical of psoriasis. Light therapy is used when the skin no longer responds to local therapies.

  • Systemic medication

For moderate and severe psoriasis, when neither topical treatments nor UV radiation help, drug therapies (retinoids, methotrexate, ciclosporin A, fumaric acid or apremilast) are used.

  • Biologics

are among the systemic treatment options. They are administered in the form of injections under the skin or intravenously. Biologics are biotechnologically produced drugs that intervene in the immunological processes in the body. By specifically blocking certain messenger substances of the immune system, inflammatory processes are stopped and symptoms are significantly reduced. Examples include TNF-a antagonists such as infliximab, etanercept and adalimumab, the interleukin 12/23 antagonist ustekinumab and the interleukin 17A antagonist secukinumab.

Study by Prof. Dr. Tamara Kopp

Blockade of IL-23 as a therapeutic option for psoriasis

A clinical study by associate professor Dr. Tamara Koppand Dr. Christine Bangert shows that the targeted blockade of a specific messenger substance of the immune system (IL-23) improves the skin symptoms of psoriasis. This messenger substance also plays a role in rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and Crohn's disease.

She was awarded the Heinrich Auspitz Prize for this research and is considered a psoriasis expert.

The anti-IL-23 antibody is not yet approved for the treatment of psoriasis.

FAQs

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition in which skin cells regenerate faster than normal. This results in the characteristic red, scaly patches of skin, which are often accompanied by itching.

Typical signs include:

  • reddened patches of skin with silvery-white scales

  • Itching or tightness

  • dry, cracked skin

  • Thickening of the skin in affected areas

The severity of the condition can vary.

Psoriasis is caused by a combination of:

  • genetic predisposition

  • Immune system malfunction

  • Environmental factors such as stress, infections, or skin irritation

The treatment is tailored to your individual needs and may include:

  • medical skincare to soothe the skin

  • anti-inflammatory creams and ointments

  • Light or laser therapies

  • Systemic therapies for severe cases

The goal is to reduce inflammation and stabilize the skin over the long term.

A complete cure is not currently possible. However, with modern treatments, the disease can be effectively managed and quality of life significantly improved.

The process begins with a thorough dermatological examination. Following this, a personalized treatment plan is developed based on your symptoms and the condition of your skin.

Most treatments are not painful. The goal is to soothe the skin and relieve discomfort.

You can support your skin by:

  • Regular, moisturizing care

  • Stress Prevention

  • Protection against skin irritation

  • healthy lifestyle

Yes, some patients also develop psoriatic arthritis, which affects the joints. In such cases, early diagnosis is particularly important.

Depending on the treatment, side effects may occur. These will be discussed in detail beforehand, and the treatment will be adjusted accordingly.

The cost depends on the chosen treatment and the individual treatment plan. An initial consultation for psoriasis costs €190.

You can get the exact prices during a personal consultation.

Since this is a medical treatment, health insurance often covers (part of) the costs.

At JUVENIS, you will be cared for by experienced dermatologists. Of particular note is Dr. Tamara Kopp, who specializes in inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis and is also actively involved in research in this field.

Through modern treatment approaches, sound medical expertise, and personalized treatment plans, we aim to achieve long-term management of the condition and a significant improvement in your quality of life.
