Examination and treatment of diabetes mellitus

Diabetes refers to a group of metabolic diseases in which the pancreas produces too little insulin. This is commonly referred to as diabetes. In untreated patients, blood sugar levels are always significantly elevated (hyperglycemia). The forms of diabetes

Type 1 diabetes

Here, antibodies destroy the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, as a result of which the pancreas can no longer produce insulin.

In most cases, children and adolescents are affected, but type 1 diabetes can also occur in adulthood.

Type 2 diabetes

Cells need more insulin to absorb sugar from the blood, which causes the pancreas to react with increased insulin secretion. As a result of years of overproduction, the body's cells eventually develop what is known as insulin resistance.

This form usually occurs in adulthood (from around the age of 50), but is also becoming increasingly common in children and adolescents as a result of overweight and obesity.
