Treatment of atopic dermatitis - neurodermatitis

Neurodermatitis (also known as atopic dermatitis) is a common skin disease that now affects up to 25% of children and 1-3% of adults. In the last four decades, the incidence of atopic dermatitis has tripled in western industrialized countries! Due to significant progress in understanding the underlying mechanisms, new therapies have been developed in recent years.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that mainly affects the large bends (elbows, hollows of the knees, neck) and is typically accompanied by very dry skin and agonizing itching. The disease can begin at different ages, but symptoms such as cradle cap on the scalp or rashes on the cheeks or stomach/back can often be found as early as the first year of life. In many of these children, however, the atopic dermatitis can improve by the time they start school with good care, so that it is estimated that only around half of children will continue to suffer from the disease. Atopic dermatitis is often accompanied by other allergic diseases such as asthma, hay fever or food allergies.

Triggers of neurodermatitis

Various trigger factors can trigger an acute flare-up at any time, even in the case of previously stable atopic dermatitis. Knowing the possible triggers can be an important strategy for doctors and patients to reduce flare-ups. It is important to clarify that avoiding the triggers can lead to an improvement in atopic dermatitis, but not to a cure.

Frequent triggers are stimuli such as climatic factors (extreme heat, cold), sweating, infections of various kinds, contact with animal hair and stress. Environmental factors such as frequent washing without subsequent skin care, irritating clothing or scratching can also worsen the skin. In addition, a seemingly harmless pollen allergy to grasses, house dust mites or birch trees, for example, can also lead to an acute flare-up through skin contact.

Therapy

The main aim of the therapy is to improve the itching and inflammation of the skin. A therapy plan individually tailored to the patient makes it easier to deal with different degrees of severity and phases of atopic dermatitis.

It is important to use care products regularly, which can significantly reduce dryness and itching of the skin. Possible triggers for flare-ups should also be identified and eliminated. In addition, temporary antipruritic, disinfectant or cortisone-containing ointments can help to improve the inflammation. In the case of very severe rashes, it is also possible to prescribe systemic medication to improve the condition.
