Anxiety disorders

When do we speak of anxiety disorders?

Anxiety can have both psychological and physical (e.g. hyperthyroidism) causes. It warns us of dangers (e.g. in road traffic or when climbing mountains) and thus makes an important contribution to our survival. However, if anxiety exceeds a sensible level, it brings us more disadvantages than advantages. Anxiety is a symptom of many psychological problems (e.g. depression, compulsions, personality disorders).

One speaks of an anxiety disorder when

  • Fears occur too frequently or last too long

  • Fears occur inappropriately/unnecessarily and more strongly than necessary

  • the fears are accompanied by a feeling of loss of control

  • Fears cause severe suffering

  • Fears cause us to avoid certain situations and thus lead to restrictions in life - both professionally and privately

Possible causes and developmental conditions of anxiety disorders

  • Increased stress levels associated with (sudden or prolonged) overload

  • Negative experiences in the past

  • Learning from a model (e.g.: The mother already suffered from anxiety disorders and showed pronounced avoidance behavior)

  • Hereditary disposition

  • Lack of learning experience (certain behaviors could not be learned, e.g. speaking in front of others)

How common are anxiety disorders?

What anxiety disorders are there?

Consequences of untreated anxiety disorders

  • Depression

  • Drug and alcohol abuse

  • Social withdrawal

  • Physical illnesses (e.g. high blood pressure, headaches)

Treatment methods as a medical specialist and psychotherapist

Specialist and disorder-specific client-centered treatment of anxiety - OA Dr. Jutta Leth

Anxiety is initially an important and vital reaction that helps us to recognize and classify danger. The fear response activates blood pressure, heart rate and breathing via the body's own stress system so that we can react to a threatening situation by attacking or fleeing. However, if this physiological reaction occurs without any external cause, it is referred to as an anxiety or panic disorder.

In which diseases does anxiety play a major role?

  • Depression

  • Generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder

  • post-traumatic stress disorders

  • Phobias (agoraphobia, social phobias)

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorders

  • schizophrenic disorders

  • Personality development disorders

Treatment Price
1 therapy session (50 minutes) for the treatment of disorder-specific client-centered anxiety € 200

In disorder-centered client-centered psychotherapy, a frequency of 1 session per week is usual.

The costs of "clinical-psychological treatment" are not reimbursed by the health insurance company. Some private supplementary insurances often cover part of the costs - however, patients should ask their supplementary insurer about this.

It is also possible to deduct clinical-psychological treatment from tax as an extraordinary burden.

Treatment methods of behavioral therapy

Treatment methods in behavioral therapy (abbreviation: VT) - Hilde Winkler and Dorothea Bertram

In order to rule out physical causes (e.g. hyperthyroidism, other hormonal disorders, heart defects) for the development of the anxiety disorder, a medical examination is strongly recommended before any psychotherapy.

Each treatment is preceded by a comprehensive diagnosis. In addition, an individual explanatory model is created, which provides insight into the development of the disorder. This includes pre-existing risk factors (e.g. increased anxiety) as well as triggers (e.g. job loss, separation, death) and maintaining factors (avoidance of feared situations, tranquilizers, high basic tension, pathological personality structure) of the illness, which are given special consideration during treatment.

  • Therapeutic relationship: The relationship between client and psychotherapist is an important factor in treatment. The therapist provides support in coping and tries to maintain a balance between change and stabilization.

  • Relaxation techniques: Learning relaxation methods (e.g. progressive muscle relaxation, abdominal breathing, autogenic training) and their regular - daily (!) - use by the patient is an integral part of anxiety treatment.

Dorothea Bertram at JUVENIS
  • Psychoeducation: The patient receives information about the respective anxiety disorder: symptoms, meaning and consequences of avoidance/security behavior, anxiety cycle, factors maintaining the disorder, etc.

  • Exposure: The patient is confronted with the anxiety-inducing situation - either in the imagination (in sensu) or with the real situation (in vivo). The patient should experience that the fears are unpleasant but not dangerous and that the feared consequence usually does not occur. Through such corrective experiences, the patient re-evaluates the original trigger of the fear.

  • Cognitive techniques: Negative thoughts, catastrophic thoughts, negative evaluations and interpretations of the feared situation are identified and "restructured" using cognitive (cognition = thought) techniques.

  • Depending on the individual problem (e.g. personality disorder, alcohol abuse), other psychotherapeutic methods may be used in specific cases.
