Prevention, diagnosis and treatment of peripheral circulatory disorders

An assessment of peripheral problems (circulatory disorders) such as the restriction of pain-free walking distance with and without open skin lesions (ulcers) initially involves an outpatient assessment. This is usually followed by a non-invasive imaging procedure such as computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) of the iliac arteries. These are used to plan a minimally invasive procedure. An orthopaedic assessment including an imaging examination of the lumbar spine is also carried out as part of the differential diagnosis.

A dermatological examination is standard. For the conservative treatment of peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAD), "vasoactive" infusions are used to improve blood flow. To restore blood flow, the underlying constriction in the blood vessel is dilated using balloon dilatation (angioplasty), possibly followed by the implantation of a stent.
