Examination and treatment of high blood pressure

The optimal average blood pressure for an adult is 120/80 mmHg. If the blood pressure values are chronically at 150/90 mmHg or above, this is referred to as high blood pressure (arterial hypertension). However, fluctuations during the day are completely normal. Blood pressure drops during periods of rest, while physical activity and mental stress cause it to rise.

Stress as a risk factor

Chronic stress is a serious factor in relation to hypertension. If left untreated, it can trigger a kind of chain reaction. This is because the heart beats faster in stressful situations, causing blood pressure to rise. This affects the kidneys via direct nerve connections. Among other things, these then produce more of a certain enzyme (renin). This leads to the increased production of a substance that increases blood pressure (angiotensin) in the body. The adrenal glands also release more of the circulatory hormone aldosterone. In the long term, this can lead to considerable damage.

Methods against high blood pressure

Changing to a healthier lifestyle can help to improve blood pressure. However, if this does not happen, or if blood pressure levels are particularly high, antihypertensive medication is used.
