Different treatments for each type of wart

Wart treatment and wart removal in Vienna

Warts (Latin: verrucae) are excessive and disturbed new skin growths. They are caused by pathogens from the human papilloma virus (HPV) group and smallpox viruses that penetrate small skin lesions or through the mucous membranes. They mainly occur on the hands, feet and in the genital area.

Although most warts are benign, they can cause varying degrees of discomfort depending on the area of skin affected and the number and size of the warts.

However, there are also some that are not infectious but are genetic or harmless local skin mutations. Although these are not warts in the true sense of the word, they are still referred to as such. They are only removed for aesthetic reasons, as they appear all over the body and can therefore be very visually disturbing.

The right treatment for all warts

Depending on the type and extent of the wart, there are several options for removing it. The dermatologist will decide which is the right treatment after a detailed assessment.

We distinguish between the following types of warts:

Viral warts/viral acanthoma

All viral warts are transmitted by smear infection. For this reason, those affected should take a few precautions to avoid infecting themselves or other people. The best thing to do is to leave the warts alone or cover them with a breathable plaster to avoid touching them all the time.

Weeks to months can pass between the time of infection and the formation of warts. The tendency to develop warts depends on the immune system. While people with an intact immune system get rid of warts very quickly or don't get them in the first place, immunocompromised people and children usually fight this viral infection for a long time.

There are several types of viral warts/viral acanthomas:

  • Prickly warts (Verrucae vulgares): hard, protuberant nodules, found particularly in children on the hands, fingers, nail edges and soles of the feet.

  • Plantar warts (verrucae plantares): mostly on the soles and undersides of the toes. They grow in depth and can become very painful when climbing, so they should be treated in good time.

  • Flat warts (verrucae planae): round, flat skin growths, can be skin-colored, yellowish to brownish. They occur most frequently on the face, wrists, backs of hands and fingers and also on the outer regions of the forearms.

  • Genital warts (Condylomata acuminata): Whitish to flesh-colored nodules. They are mainly transmitted through sexual intercourse and therefore occur in the genital and anal area.

  • Brush warts (Verrucae filiformes): thread-like skin growths, usually appear on the face, especially on the eyelids, neck, chin and near the lips.

  • Molluscum contagiosa: Small, skin-colored to pink globules with doughy contents, they can occur all over the body and are most common in children.

Non-infectious warts

They are not transmissible and are removed purely for aesthetic reasons, as there is no medical necessity. Harmless, non-infectious warts sometimes look very similar to malignant skin lesions. Dermatologists can usually assign them to the correct category at a glance. In case of doubt, a skin biopsy is performed.

  • Age warts (Verrucae seborrhoica): mostly dark, rough spots, usually appear in old age, as the name suggests. As they grow relatively quickly and sometimes itch, they are often mistaken for black skin cancer (melanoma) by laypeople.

  • Stalk warts (skin tags/fibroma molle): skin protrusions a few millimeters in size, usually found on the neck, in the armpits and groin area, but sometimes also on the eyelids.

There are several types of warts:

  • Common warts (Verrucae vulgares)
  • Plantar warts (Verrucae plantares)
  • Flat warts (Verrucae planae)
  • Genital warts (condylomata acuminata)
  • Filiform warts (Verrucae filiformes)
  • Molluscum contagiosum

The treatment strategy always depends on the type, location, and size of the wart.

We always choose the method that is gentlest on your skin and most effective at the same time.

The pain depends on the method chosen and the location of the wart. Many treatments are virtually painless or are performed under local anesthesia, making them very well tolerated.

That depends on the type of wart and its severity. Smaller warts can often be removed in one session. Stubborn or deep-seated warts sometimes require several sessions.

After treatment, it may take several days to weeks for the skin to heal completely. Our doctors will give you detailed care instructions to support rapid healing without complications.

Since most warts are caused by viruses, they can theoretically reappear. However, thorough treatment and a strengthened immune system significantly reduce the likelihood of this happening. Infectious warts include: common warts (verrucae vulgares), plantar warts (verrucae plantares), flat warts (verrucae planae), genital warts (condylomata acuminata), filiform warts (verrucae filiformes), and molluscum contagiosum.

Yes, many warts are contagious. Warts can be transmitted through direct skin contact or indirectly, e.g., via shared towels or floors in swimming pools. Early treatment prevents them from spreading further. Infectious warts include: common warts (verrucae vulgares), plantar warts (verrucae plantares), flat warts (verrucae planae), genital warts (condylomata acuminata), thread warts (verrucae filiformes), and molluscum contagiosum.

After wart treatment, slight redness, swelling, or scabbing may occur, but these symptoms subside quickly. In rare cases, scarring may occur, but this is minimized by using gentle techniques.

The cost depends on the size, number, and location of the warts, as well as the method chosen. The initial consultation at JUVENIS costs €190
An individual cost estimate will be provided during the consultation.

Depending on the findings, partial reimbursement by your health insurance provider may be possible, as this is partly a medically necessary treatment. You will receive an invoice for submission.

This treatment is a particularly gentle method. The neodymium-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (ND:YAG) laser is a high-performance laser that is used in a variety of ways in dermatology. Thanks to its special wavelength (1064 nm), it can penetrate deep into the skin and destroy the wart tissue in a targeted manner without severely damaging the surrounding tissue.
