Cerebral arterial occlusive disease

Prevention, diagnosis and treatment of CAVK - Stroke prevention

The four carotid arteries supply the brain with blood. Ultrasound can be used to examine their blood flow in a painless way. This is used for the early detection of blood fat deposits (intima-media thickness), calcification or narrowing of the blood vessels, which can lead to circulatory disorders and, in the worst case, to a stroke.

Carotid artery examination with JUVENIS

Treatments & therapies

When is an ultrasound of the cervical arteries useful?

  • for dizziness

  • in the event of sudden visual or speech disorders

  • in the event of frequent collapses or unconsciousness (syncope)

  • for the early detection of atherosclerosis - allows conclusions to be drawn about the individual cardiovascular risk

  • to prevent a stroke

Treatment procedure

Stroke prevention

A typical assessment and treatment for cerebral arterial occlusive disease (CAVD) includes ultrasound of the carotid arteries, angiography of the carotid and cephalic arteries using magnetic resonance angiography or contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the skull, and a clinical neurological examination.

Endovascular treatment of cerebral arterial occlusive disease (CABD) involves an interventional procedure in which an underlying constriction in the blood vessel is stretched (angioplasty) and supported from the inside (stent implantation).

FAQs

Cerebral arterial occlusive disease refers to the narrowing or blockage of blood vessels that supply the brain. This can restrict blood flow to the brain, increasing the risk of a stroke.

Common causes include:

  • Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)

  • High blood pressure

  • high cholesterol levels

  • Smoking

  • Diabetes mellitus

  • Lack of exercise

Possible warning signs include:

  • sudden speech difficulties

  • Dizziness or balance problems

  • Vision problems

  • Symptoms of paralysis or numbness

  • severe headache

If you experience acute symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

A stroke can have serious consequences. Early diagnosis and treatment can help identify risk factors and potentially prevent strokes.

The examination may include:

  • detailed medical history

  • Blood Pressure Monitoring

  • Ultrasound of the neck vessels (carotid duplex)

  • Blood tests

  • Internal medicine and vascular medicine evaluation

The process begins with a detailed discussion of your symptoms and risk factors. Following that, we will perform the appropriate tests for your specific situation. The diagnostic procedures are generally painless and non-invasive.

Key measures include:

  • Monitoring blood pressure and cholesterol

  • Quitting Smoking

  • regular exercise

  • healthy eating

  • Treatment of existing conditions such as diabetes

Yes. Depending on the findings, the following may be used:

  • drug therapies

  • Management of risk factors

  • regular follow-ups

  • further procedures in certain cases

An examination is particularly recommended in the following cases:

  • family history

  • High blood pressure

  • Smoking

  • elevated cholesterol levels

  • Diabetes

  • as one gets older

The cost depends on the scope of the diagnostic tests and examinations. The initial consultation (depending on the necessary tests) costs between €290 and €350.

You can get the exact prices during a personal consultation.

Since these are medical examinations, health insurance may often cover some or all of the costs.

At JUVENIS, you benefit from state-of-the-art vascular diagnostics, personalized care, and experienced specialists. Through early detection of vascular changes and targeted prevention, your risk of stroke and vascular disease is significantly reduced.
