Rosacea/acne Rosacea/rosacea acne

Rosacea - also known as acne rosacea or pink acne - is a skin condition that takes many forms. These include redness, itching and acne-like, inflammatory skin changes. The blushing of the facial skin in situations where it is least needed is also part of this clinical picture.

Acne rosacea is a long-term, non-contagious disease of the facial skin that affects around five to ten percent of adults. It mainly affects fair-skinned people over the age of 35. It also occurs more frequently in women than in men.

Rosacea usually begins with the appearance of fleeting, seizure-like redness on the face. Initially, the redness disappears after a certain amount of time, but it can become permanent as the disease progresses. In more than half of patients, inflamed nodules and pimples appear as the disease progresses. You should see a dermatologist at this point at the latest.

More than half of acne rosacea patients complain of stinging and burning eyes as well as a foreign body sensation and sensitivity to the sun.

In the longer term, intensive pulsed light therapy (IPL) or laser therapy (e.g. Nd:Yag laser) helps to combat facial redness and dilated veins. In most cases, 3 to 5 treatments at intervals of around 3 weeks are recommended in order to achieve good, lasting results. These are carried out during the low-light season. The skin must be pre-treated with soothing, pigment-stabilizing creams in order to achieve a safe and effective result.

FAQs

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that primarily affects the face. Typical symptoms include redness, visible broken capillaries, and inflammatory skin lesions, usually on the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin.

The most common signs include:

  • Persistent redness on the face

  • Visible, dilated capillaries (rosacea)

  • inflammatory papules and pustules

  • A burning sensation or tightness in the skin

  • sensitive, easily irritated skin

The exact causes are not yet fully understood. However, the following factors play a role:

  • genetic predisposition

  • Skin barrier disorders

  • Overreaction of the immune system

  • Environmental factors such as UV radiation, stress, or temperature fluctuations

Treatment is tailored to each individual and may include:

  • medical skincare

  • anti-inflammatory creams or medications

  • Laser and light therapies to reduce redness and visible blood vessels

  • targeted therapies for advanced forms

The goal is to reduce redness and stabilize the skin over the long term.

Rosacea cannot be completely cured, but with the right treatment, it can be managed very effectively, leading to a significant improvement in symptoms.

The process begins with a thorough dermatological examination to determine the severity of the rosacea. A personalized treatment plan is then developed.

Common triggers include:

  • Sun and UV radiation

  • spicy foods and alcohol

  • Stress

  • significant temperature differences

  • unsuitable skin care products

These should be avoided whenever possible.

Yes, in some cases, a condition known as ocular rosacea may develop, in which the eyes become irritated or inflamed. In this case, it is particularly important to consult a doctor.

Depending on the treatment, side effects may occur, which will be discussed in detail beforehand. The treatment is chosen to be as gentle and effective as possible.

The cost depends on the treatment option chosen and the individual treatment plan. The initial consultation for rosacea costs €190. An IPL treatment for rosacea on the face starts at €290.

You can get the exact prices during a personal consultation.

Since this is a medical treatment, health insurance often covers (part of) the costs.
