Daylight photodynamic therapy is a particularly gentle form of treatment used for superficial tumors such as actinic keratoses (precursors of white skin cancer), Bowen's disease and superficial basal cell carcinomas (white skin cancer).

In daylight photodynamic therapy we apply a special active-ingredient cream locally to the affected skin areas in the clinic. The cream's effect is activated by daylight, which damages and destroys abnormal cells. This process requires a two-hour stay outdoors in sunny or slightly cloudy weather. During this therapy you will also receive a sunscreen suitable for PDT to effectively protect you from harmful UV rays.

What should be observed after treatment?

  • In the next few days, a high sun protection (SPF 50+) must always be applied.

  • Redness and scabs will form at the treated areas; these must not be picked off. These side effects will subside after one to two weeks.

When should the treatment not be performed?

  • in case of hypersensitivity to methyl aminolevulinate or to any of the excipients

  • if a sclerodermiform basal cell carcinoma has been diagnosed

Photodynamic therapy is a gentle procedure for the treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer and its precursors (e.g. actinic keratoses). A light-sensitive substance is applied to the skin, which is then activated with special light in order to specifically destroy diseased cells.

First, an active substance is applied to the affected area of skin, which preferentially accumulates in altered cells. After an incubation period the skin is exposed to light. This induces a reaction that selectively destroys diseased cells, while healthy tissue is spared.

Photodynamic therapy is primarily used for:

  • actinic keratoses (precursors of skin cancer)

  • superficial non-melanoma skin cancer (e.g., basal cell carcinoma)

  • photo-damaged skin

After preparing the skin, the light-activated substance is applied. After a certain incubation period the targeted light irradiationThe entire treatment takes several hours, while the actual light exposure makes up only part of that.

During the illumination a burning or a feeling of warmth may occur, which can be perceived with varying intensity. The symptoms subside quickly after the treatment.

After therapy, there may be Redness, swelling, or crusting occur. These reactions are part of the healing process and usually subside within a few days to weeks.

The treated skin lesions heal over the following weeks. The final result becomes apparent once the skin has fully regenerated.

In many cases, one treatment is sufficient. Depending on the findings, however, a repeat treatment or follow-up may be necessary.

Yes, PDT is a non-invasive alternative in which no surgical intervention is necessary. As a result, there are usually no or only minimal scarring, and larger areas of skin can be treated.

After PDT you should:

  • strictly avoid direct sunlight

  • protect the treated skin areas

  • use the recommended skincare products
