Daylight therapy against skin cancer at JUVENIS in Vienna

Skin cancer treatment with photodynamic therapy (PDT)

White skin cancer and its precursors are becoming increasingly common, with increasing age, sun exposure and tanning beds playing a significant role. Photodynamic therapy at the JUVENIS Medical Center provides targeted help here.

Photodynamic therapy "Daylight" is a particularly gentle form of therapy that is used to treat superficial tumors such as actinic keratoses (precursors of white skin cancer), Bowen's disease and superficial basal cell carcinomas (white skin cancer).

Treatment procedure

In photodynamic therapy with daylight, we apply a special active ingredient cream locally to the affected areas of skin in the practice. The effect of the cream is activated by daylight, which damages and destroys degenerated cells. This process requires a two-hour stay outdoors in sunny or slightly cloudy weather. With this therapy, you will also receive a sunscreen suitable for PDT to effectively protect you from harmful UV rays.

FAQs

Photodynamic therapy is a gentle treatment for basal cell carcinoma and its precursors (e.g., actinic keratoses). In this procedure, a light-sensitive substance is applied to the skin and then activated with a special light to selectively destroy abnormal cells.

First, an active ingredient is applied to the affected area of skin, which tends to accumulate in abnormal cells. After a period of time, the skin is exposed to light. This triggers a reaction that specifically destroys abnormal cells while sparing healthy tissue.

Photodynamic therapy is primarily used for:

  • actinic keratoses (precancerous skin lesions)

  • superficial white skin cancer (e.g., basal cell carcinoma)

  • sun-damaged skin

After the skin has been prepared, the light-sensitive substance is applied. After a specific exposure time, targeted light irradiation is administered. The entire treatment lasts several hours, with the actual light exposure accounting for only a portion of that time.

During the procedure, you may experience a burning sensation or a feeling of warmth, which can vary in intensity. These symptoms subside quickly after the treatment.

After treatment, you may experience redness, swelling, or scabbing. These reactions are part of the healing process and usually subside within a few days to a few weeks.

The treated skin lesions will heal over the next few weeks. The final results will be visible once the skin has fully regenerated.

In many cases, a single treatment is sufficient. However, depending on the findings, a repeat treatment or follow-up may be necessary.

Yes, PDT is a non-invasive alternative that does not require surgery. As a result, there is usually little to no scarring, and larger areas of skin can be treated.

After PDT, you should:

  • Strictly avoid direct sunlight

  • protect the treated areas of skin

  • use the recommended care products

The cost depends on the area being treated and the extent of the therapy. The cost of photodynamic therapy for basal cell carcinoma starts at €450.

You can get the exact prices during a personal consultation.

Since this may be medically necessary treatment, health insurance often covers (part of) the costs.

At JUVENIS, you will be cared for by experienced dermatologists. Using state-of-the-art technology, precise diagnostics, and personalized treatment plans, we ensure effective, gentle, and safe treatment of skin conditions.
