Dermatological screening at JUVENIS
Skin cancer screening & birthmark check Vienna
In the course of our lives, some moles are added, some become larger and others even change color. This can be harmless. And yet: regular self-checks and a specialist skin cancer screening or mole check at the JUVENIS medical center in Vienna can save lives. Because the earlier skin cancer is detected, the better the chances of recovery.
More and more people are developing skin cancer every year. The sun is therefore still underestimated. The good news is that skin cancer can be detected at an early stage and is then usually curable. Early detection of skin cancer is therefore an important factor for healthy skin - in addition to a healthy amount of sun exposure and sun protection.

Digital reflected light microscopy using the FotoFinder dermoscope at JUVENIS
Skin cancer screening in Vienna is carried out at JUVENIS using a modern method for checking moles: digital reflected light microscopy. A full-body screening is carried out using the FotoFinder dermoscope. This allows the doctor to see into the uppermost layer of skin and assess any abnormalities. Ideally, moles should be checked once a year. The findings and images are saved, which is very helpful for check-ups.

Treatment procedure birthmark check
During a skin cancer screening or birthmark check in Vienna, the nevi are examined in detail using a reflected light microscope. JUVENIS uses the most modern method currently available for screening: digital reflected light microscopy. The FotoFinder dermoscope is a device that can take digital images of moles in high resolution and detail.
This enables us to take a close look at the mole and observe any changes. In detail, the FotoFinder dermoscope allows us to look into the uppermost layer of the skin and assess the key criteria for malignancy, such as the structure and arrangement of the pigment and blood vessels as well as the color.
Please contact JUVENIS by phone at +43 1 236 3020by e-mail to empfang@juvenismed.at or via the contact formto make an appointment for a consultation or treatment.
Dysplastic nevi and melanomas can be detected at an early stage. The FotoFinder Dermoscope has software that scans the mole and algorithmically calculates how dangerous the mole is. If it has been more than a year since your last visit to the dermatologist, you should definitely go for a mole check or skin cancer screening.

Moles & skin cancer
What are birthmarks/atypical nevi/melanomas?
Everyone has more or less moles/liver spots on their skin. These are technically known as nevi and are benign. In addition to these benign nevi, there are also atypical nevi, which have an increased risk of developing into melanoma (black skin cancer). Sometimes a melanoma can be hidden behind a seemingly harmless nevus.

What types of skin cancer are there?
There are two types of skin cancer:
When to get skin cancer screening?
How often should a birthmark check be carried out?
In principle, a skin cancer screening should be carried out once a year. For patients at risk, the examination may also be necessary more often depending on the case.
The risk group includes:
Melanomas can be so small and inconspicuous!
Figure 1 shows a melanoma detected early by dermatologist Dr. Tamara Kopp (see arrow). The suspicion was confirmed histologically after removal.

Image 2 shows the melanoma greatly enlarged, photographed and documented with our FotoFinder dermoscope. The FotoFinder dermoscope is a device that can take digital images of moles in detailed and high resolution, allowing the mole to be viewed closely and changes to be detected immediately.
If melanoma is detected early, the chance of a complete cure increases. The treatment of skin cancer and dermatosurgical removal was carried out by dermatologist Dr. Tamara Kopp.

During a birthmark check, dermatologist Dr. Tamara Kopp discovered a conspicuous birthmark on this patient's shoulder blade, which turned out to be a melanoma - a malignant form of skin cancer. The finding was confirmed after a thorough analysis using a dermatoscope.
To prevent the spread, the melanoma was removed in a minor surgical procedure. The affected tissue was generously removed to ensure that no cancer cells remained. The procedure was successful and the wound healed very well.
This experience shows how important it is to recognize skin changes at an early stage and to go for regular skin cancer screening - because skin cancer can be treated well in most cases if it is detected early.

This photo shows a macro image of the melanoma. It impressively shows the characteristic warning signs of this dangerous skin change. Typical are asymmetrical shapes, irregular edges, an uneven color distribution with different shades of brown and black and a diameter of over 5 millimeters.
Such details illustrate how important it is to check the skin regularly and have a dermatological examination carried out if there are any abnormalities. Early detection can be life-saving, as melanomas can spread quickly. If you are unsure, you should not hesitate to seek medical advice.

During a mole check, Dr. Tamara Kopp noticed a pigment change that stood out from the other moles in terms of color, shape and size. Using modern diagnostic techniques such as dermoscopy, she was able to identify initial indications of a malignant change. For final clarification, a tissue sample was taken and examined in the laboratory - with the result that it was indeed an early-stage melanoma.
In this photo you can see what the melanoma looked like on the patient (see arrow).

To the naked eye, a melanoma may often just look like a dark spot - but under extreme magnification, a fascinating yet disturbing structure is revealed. Macro images of a malignant melanoma show a chaotic mosaic of irregular pigmentation, asymmetrical edges and color transitions ranging from deep black to dark brown to reddish or even bluish inclusions.
This magnification shows impressively why early detection is so important. Even the smallest changes, which are barely visible to the naked eye, can become conspicuous under macroscopic or dermoscopic magnification. Thanks to modern imaging techniques, melanomas can now be diagnosed earlier than ever before - a decisive advantage for the chances of recovery.

A conspicuous birthmark was discovered on this patient's back by dermatologist Dr. Tamara Kopp. The conspicuous tissue was removed and histologically examined. Dr. Tamara Kopp's suspicion was confirmed: it was a melanoma.
Malignant melanoma, also known as "black skin cancer", is one of the most aggressive types of skin cancer. It develops from pigment-forming cells (melanocytes) and can form metastases at a very early stage. Early detection and treatment is therefore crucial for successful therapy.

Here you can see a close-up of this malignant melanoma: the irregular borders, the asymmetrical shape and the different pigmentation are clearly visible - typical characteristics of a dangerous skin tumor.

Macro image of a melanoma
A highly magnified image (macro image) of a melanoma shows impressively how different skin cancer can look in detail. Under the microscope or in extreme close-up, what the naked eye often overlooks becomes visible: irregular pigment distribution, blurred edges, color gradients from light brown to black and microscopically small changes in the skin structure.
These details are crucial for the diagnosis. A melanoma develops from pigment-forming cells (melanocytes) and - in contrast to harmless moles - can form metastases at an early stage. Therefore, the earlier a melanoma is detected and removed, the better the chances of recovery.

ABCD rule: Distinguish birthmark from melanoma
Dangerous melanomas have typical characteristics that patients can look out for as part of a self-examination (ABCD rule). This self-examination should alert you to suspicious lesions. However, it cannot replace annual skin cancer screening by an experienced dermatologist.

FAQs
As a rule, an annual check-up is recommended. If you have many moles, fair skin, frequent sun exposure or a family history of moles, a six-monthly check-up may be advisable.
Our dermatologists carefully examine the entire skin using a reflected light microscope (dermatoscope). Conspicuous moles are digitally documented so that changes can be accurately compared over time.
No, the examination is completely painless and usually only takes a few minutes.
If skin cancer or a preliminary stage is suspected, the affected mole is removed and histologically (histologically) examined. This enables a reliable diagnosis to be made and, if necessary, treatment to be started at an early stage.
If detected early, skin cancer is usually completely curable. Regular mole checks help to detect dangerous changes in good time and thus avoid complications.
A check-up is generally advisable from adolescence - especially for people with many moles or a family history of moles. Children with conspicuous moles should also be examined.
