• Medical screening: If a birthmark changes in shape, color, size or structure, this may indicate skin cancer. Always have such changes examined by a dermatologist.
• Aesthetic reasons: If a birthmark is perceived as disturbing, for example on the face or in a conspicuous place, removal can increase well-being.
• Mechanical irritation: Moles that are located in areas that are constantly exposed to friction or pressure (e.g. on the waistband or under bra straps) can be removed to avoid irritation.

How does a mole removal procedure work?

The removal of a birthmark is usually an uncomplicated and safe procedure that is performed on an outpatient basis. There are various methods:

1. Surgical removal: The mole is cut out with a scalpel. This method is chosen if there is a suspicion of skin cancer, as the tissue can then be examined in the laboratory.
2. Laser treatment: This method is used particularly for small, inconspicuous moles. It is less invasive and usually leaves barely visible scars.
3. Cryotherapy: Liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the birthmark. This method is particularly suitable for harmless skin lesions.

The procedure usually only takes a few minutes and is performed under local anesthesia.

What needs to be considered after removal?

After mole removal, you should take good care of the wound to avoid infection and promote healing:

• Keep the wound clean and dry.
• If necessary, change the dressing regularly.
• Avoid direct sunlight on the affected area to minimize scarring.
• Follow your doctor's instructions exactly.
