• Aesthetic reasons: If a mole is perceived as bothersome, for example on the face or in a conspicuous location, removal can improve well-being.
• Mechanical irritation: Moles that are located in areas constantly exposed to friction or pressure (e.g., at the waistline or under bra straps) can be removed to avoid irritation.

How is a mole removal performed?

Removing a mole is usually a straightforward and safe procedure performed on an outpatient basis. There are several methods:

1. Surgical excision: In this procedure, the mole is cut out with a scalpel. This method is chosen when there is a suspicion of skin cancer, as the tissue can then be examined in the laboratory.
2. Laser treatment: This method is especially used for small, inconspicuous moles. It is less invasive and usually leaves hardly any visible scars.
3. Cryotherapy: The mole is frozen with liquid nitrogen. This method is particularly suitable for benign skin changes.

The procedure usually takes only a few minutes and is performed under local anesthesia.

What should be observed after removal?

After mole removal, you should care for the wound well to prevent infection and promote healing:

• Keep the wound clean and dry.
• Change the dressing regularly if necessary.
• Avoid direct sunlight on the affected area to minimize scarring.
• Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.
