In a study by a surgical team led by Natalie Popenko from the University of California, about 580 participants were shown different female faces with various mouths to rate. The researchers related the size of the mouths to the rest of the face. The mouths were altered in 5 different sizes – significantly reduced and up to 250% larger. Afterwards, in a second round, the variations in the ratio of lower to upper lip were changed for the most popular faces.

The result of this study showed that a mouth in which the lower lip is approximately twice as large as the upper lip is perceived as the most attractive.

According to the study, the most attractive lips were those in which the lower lip is twice as large as the upper lip. The ideal lips occupy about 10% of the lower third of the face. These study results can serve as a guideline for lip treatments.
