In an IPL hair removal treatment, short light pulses from a flash lamp are emitted that then penetrate the skin. The light is absorbed by the pigment melanin contained in the hair and converted into heat. The heat generated in this way is transmitted from the hair into the hair follicle, destroying it and preventing the regrowth of hair.

The treatment takes between 10 and 60 minutes depending on the size of the area to be treated and is hardly painful. For permanent hair removal, multiple treatments are necessary because only hair follicles that are in the growth phase are affected. These are usually around 20% to 30%. After each treatment there is less hair. Overall, usually 4 to 6 sessions are required.
