A newly published study confirms what we have long suspected: sunscreen protects against UV light-induced photoaging of the skin. In the study by Hughes MC et al, the effect of sunscreen on the progression of photoageing was examined in 604 adult Australians. Specifically, sunscreen with SPF 15 was applied daily over a period of 4.5 years. Photo-induced photodamage was measured at the beginning of the study and after 4.5 years. The results showed that those who applied sunscreen had a 24% reduced risk of UV-induced photoaging compared to the control group. In addition, the same scientific group demonstrated the benefits of UV light protection for the prevention of white and black skin cancer.
