A fruit acid peel helps the skin with regeneration and new cell formation, but such a peel is not always the right choice and not for all skin types. Dermatologist Dr. Tamara Kopp from the JUVENIS beauty center in Vienna provides information in a interview with the magazine Woman about the costs, procedure and risks of fruit acid peels.

What exactly is a fruit acid peel?
For a Fruit acid peel lactic, malic, citric and tartaric acid are usually used. A course (several skin treatments) comprises, depending on the skin type, 5 to 10 treatments, which are performed on the face and décolleté at intervals of 2 to 6 weeks. How strong the effect is depends on the concentration of the fruit acid, the pH value of the products and the application time.
In a fruit acid peel, the upper part of the skin layer is removed and collagen formation in the deeper skin layers is stimulated. Furthermore, 'acne bacteria' are inhibited, fine wrinkles can be reduced, pigment irregularities can be evened out, pores refined and skin blemishes improved. A fruit acid peel results in a well-groomed and even skin appearance.
The effects last up to 2 years, but only with very careful sun protection; otherwise pigment spots return very quickly.
Who is a fruit acid peel suitable for?
A fruit acid peel is suitable for people who want to maintain their fresh, youthful appearance and refine the skin texture (coarse-pored skin). It is also helpful for impure skin or acne scars, pigment irregularities, small wrinkles or mature skin.
People with dry and sensitive skin, skin eczema or couperose, acne rosacea I° (dilated blood vessels) should not use the peel. Also, peeling should not be performed at the same time if tetracyclines or vitamin A preparations, such as isotretinoin (typical medications for treating acne), are being taken. The reason is that these medications increase light sensitivity and the tendency to hyperpigmentation.
Does a fruit acid peel have side effects?

Mostly there are only irritations (redness) that disappear again after a short time. Only with too high a concentration, too long an application time and also with insufficient sun protection can it, in the worst case, lead to scarring or hyperpigmentation.
The fruit acid peel is felt during the treatment as a slight burning sensation, which stops immediately when 'neutralized'. Dermatologist Dr. Tamara Kopp at JUVENIS in Vienna always cools the skin with air during the treatment.
After 2 days, peeling occurs, which lasts about 2-4 days and the skin becomes "smooth".
After the peel, a skin-soothing moisturizer should be applied. A rich care cream should be used at the start of the peeling process. As always, make sure to use good sun protection here as well.
What needs to be considered for a fruit acid peel?
Before starting the course, it is best to already apply light fruit acid-containing and pigment-stabilizing skincare products and to regularly use a sunscreen (SPF 50). This allows the skin to get used to the fruit acid and protects against hyperpigmentation.
The best time for a fruit acid peel in our latitudes is autumn, winter and early spring, as the sun is not as strong then. You can also peel when the skin is still tanned from summer, but you must always pay attention to intensive sun protection 2 weeks before, during and 2 months after the treatments.
