After a day in the sun, many people reach for after-sun creams to soothe and care for the skin. But are they really useful? Are there differences?

In the newspaper Kurier, Prof. Dr. Tamara Kopp discusses after-sun creams

Univ. Prof. Dr. Tamara Kopp informiert in einem Interview mit der Tageszeitung Kurier auf was man bei einer After-Sun-Creme achten sollte:

  • Avoid alcohol-based additives
  • Beware of extracts of chamomile or calendula as well as fragrances – many people are allergic to them
  • the cream should absorb quickly
  • it should not contain carcinogenic MOAH (mineral oil hydrocarbon)

After-sun creams with ingredients such as aloe vera, chamomile or witch hazel are recommended; these have a soothing and cooling effect. Furthermore, added glycerin protects against drying out and panthenol stimulates the skin's cell division, which promotes regeneration.

In case of severe sunburns (blistering, skin peeling, open wounds) always consult a doctor immediately.
