Acne scars occur when the skin does not fully regenerate after inflammatory blemishes. The inflammation often destroys parts of the collagen structure, resulting in depressions (atrophic scars) or, less commonly, elevations (hypertrophic scars). The earlier treatment begins, the better the chances of a visible improvement.
