World Psoriasis Day takes place every year on October 29. This day is dedicated to people with psoriasis, to raise awareness of this disease and to draw attention to modern treatment options.
What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis, better known as psoriasis, is a systemic disease that affects over 125 million people worldwide. It is a chronic inflammatory disease that is caused by a malfunction of the body's immune system. In those affected, the skin renews itself 8 times faster than normal. Overactivation of the immune cells leads to the release of inflammatory factors in the skin, resulting in scaly, reddened areas with itching.
People with psoriasis have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders and obesity. Psoriatic arthritis often occurs, in which the joints swell and cause pain. The visually unattractive affected skin areas and severe itching often cause psychological distress, which can manifest itself in depression.
Recognizing and avoiding psoriasis triggers
Some factors can promote an outbreak: stress, alcohol and nicotine, skin irritation, various medications (e.g. for rheumatism or high blood pressure), hormonal changes (puberty, pregnancy, menopause).
It is advisable to limit or completely avoid nicotine and alcohol consumption, reduce excess weight and pay attention to your diet. It is important to relax physically and mentally.
Use skin-friendly products for skin care and do not shower or bathe too hot. Apply cream and care for the skin daily.
Treatments and therapies for psoriasis
Unfortunately, psoriasis cannot be cured, but there are already several good ways to significantly reduce the symptoms.
Depending on the severity, there are various options for therapy:
- Topical treatment (local therapy)
- Light therapy (UV radiation)
- Systemic medication
- Biologics, intravenously or by injection
