In Austria there are increasing cases of scabies (also called Scabies or Skabies). But what exactly is scabies? Prof. Dr. Tamara Kopp explains scabies and how it is treated in an interview.

Univ. Prof. Dr. Tamara Kopp explains in an interview with Schau-TV about scabies, how it is transmitted and how it is treated.

Scabies is a parasitic skin disease that is transmitted through prolonged skin contact. The symptoms present as intense itching and a rash. The cause is a mite, specifically the fertilized female mites. These burrow small tunnels into the skin and lay their eggs there. They usually enter the skin at thin areas, such as under the armpits, between the fingers or toes.

If infected, it is essential to treat it, as it will not heal on its own. Scabies is treated with a special cream. In addition, clothing and bedding should be washed at 60°C, or sealed airtight in a plastic bag for a few days. It is also advisable that people in the same household be treated at the same time.
