A melanoma detected early can save lives — as shown by the case of a patient who presented to our dermatology practice for a routine skin examination with Dr. Tamara Kopp. Thanks to the expert examination by the dermatologist, an abnormal skin lesion was identified and diagnosed at an early stage.

During the examination, Dr. Tamara Kopp noticed a pigment change that differed in color, shape and size from the other moles. By using modern diagnostic techniques such as dermatoscopy, she was able to detect initial signs of a malignant change. For definitive clarification, a tissue sample was taken and examined in the laboratory — with the result that it was indeed an early-stage melanoma.

If a melanoma is detected at an early stage, the chance of complete cure increases. The Treatment of skin cancer or respectively the dermatosurgical removal is performed at JUVENIS by experienced dermatologists.

Here we show an example from a patient in which a melanoma was detected early by dermatologist Dr. Tamara Kopp (see arrow). The suspicion was histologically confirmed after removal.

Melanoma under the macro lens: A close-up of the danger

To the naked eye a melanoma may often appear only as a dark spot — but in extreme magnification a fascinating and at the same time alarming structure is revealed. Macro images of a malignant melanoma show a chaotic mosaic of irregular pigmentations, asymmetric borders and color transitions ranging from deep black through dark brown to reddish or even bluish inclusions.

The uneven distribution of pigment is a typical sign of malignant skin changes. While benign moles are often evenly colored and well defined, a melanoma appears restless and frayed under the microscope — a warning sign for dermatologists. In extreme close-up, tiny blood vessels and microscopically small elevations also become visible, indicating uncontrolled cell growth.

This magnification impressively illustrates why early detection is so crucial. The smallest changes that are barely visible to the naked eye can become conspicuous under macro or dermatoscopic magnification. Thanks to modern imaging techniques, melanomas can be diagnosed earlier than ever before — a decisive advantage for chances of cure.

A close look at the skin can save lives. Anyone who notices new or changing moles should not hesitate to consult a dermatologist.
