When your skin itches, your eyes water and you can't breathe, it's often not just the summer that's to blame. Climate change, flowering ornamental grasses in the city and strong UV radiation put a strain on the body - especially for allergy sufferers. But there is help.
For many people, summer means lightness, sunshine and spending time outdoors. For allergy sufferers, however, this time of year can be a real test of endurance: Insect bites, pollen and the sun's rays not only push the immune system to its limits, but also the skin. Together with colleagues, dermatologist Dr. Tamara Kopp from JUVENIS explains in an interview with the daily newspaper KURIER on the subject of summer allergies what you should look out for - and what really helps.
Insect bites - harmless or dangerous?
A single sting is often only unpleasant. But anyone who has an allergic reaction can develop serious symptoms within a few minutes: Shortness of breath, swelling of the face or circulatory problems. In the worst case, there is a risk of anaphylactic shock.
Our tip:
Allergy sufferers should always carry an emergency kit with an adrenaline auto-injector. In the event of stings in the mouth or throat, everyone should call an ambulance immediately.
Pollen in constant flight - climate change is having an effect
Did you know that around 30% of Austrians are now affected by pollen allergies? Thanks to mild winters and hot summers, the season now lasts almost all year round. Particularly problematic: southern grass species and allergy-causing plants, which are increasingly being used in urban greening projects.
We recommend for heavy loads:
- FFP2 mask in windy conditions
- Sea salt sprays & eye drops
- Air purifier & pollen screen at home
Thunderstorm asthma: an underestimated risk
Hot, humid, windy - ideal conditions for bursting pollen grains that penetrate particularly deep into the airways. This phenomenon is known as "thunderstorm asthma" and mainly affects sensitive people.
Sun allergy - when UV radiation stresses the skin
Itching, red pustules and tightness after sunbathing? Behind a supposed allergy is usually a light dermatosis - a hypersensitivity reaction of the skin to UVA rays.
How to protect your skin effectively:
- Sun cream with high UVA protection
- UV protective clothing & sun hats
- Fern extract capsules (Polypodium leucotomos) for internal skin strengthening
- Cooling after-sun products
- For acute reactions: Cortisone ointments
