Depression is on the rise, especially in industrialized countries. In addition to improved diagnostics and decreasing shame, this is primarily due to social conditions, demands and people's modern lifestyles. Above all, it is noticeably affecting younger and younger people. Finding meaning and perspective in life seems to be becoming increasingly difficult.
Having depression treated
It would be important for politicians to recognize this problem and provide sufficient resources so that rapid interventions and shorter waiting times for treatment for depression are possible. Above all, however, investments must be made in prevention. Early detection must start with children and adolescents and therefore in schools and families.
Similarly, greater emphasis must be placed on maintaining mental health in the workplace. Dr. Jutta Leth emphasizes that, above all, we need to start a social discourse on why so many people are so unhappy and overwhelmed, even though we seem to be doing so well.
Dr. Jutta Leth, psychiatrist and psychotherapist at JUVENIS in Vienna, provides information about depression in an article in the daily newspaper Krone.
