A cold sore (herpes labialis) is caused by the herpes simplex virus (usually type 1). It often occurs on the lips and begins with a tingling or burning sensation before painful blisters form. These burst after a few days and crust over until they heal within around one to two weeks.
Cold sore: causes, treatment avoidance
Causes:
The virus is transmitted by droplet infection or direct skin contact and remains in the body for life. A weakened immune system, stress, strong sunlight or fever can trigger reactivation.
Treatment:
Special antiviral creams or patches help to speed up the healing of a cold sore. Home remedies such as honey, lemon balm extract or tea tree oil can have a soothing effect. It is important not to touch the blisters to prevent them from spreading.
Avoid cold sores
- Maintain hygiene: Always wash your hands, do not share cutlery or glasses
- Avoid kissing: No direct lip contact with others
- Maintain wound healing: Herpes plasters, patches, creams
