In our last news, we reported that dermatologists expect an increase in skin cancer due to climate change. Every year, temperatures are rising, UV exposure is increasing and cases of skin cancer are on the rise. Sun protection with sufficient sunscreen should be part of everyone's daily routine, even on cloudy days and especially in summer.

To prevent skin cancer, always check moles for abnormalities and have them checked once a year by a dermatologist during a skin cancer screening. If there are any abnormalities, go to a dermatologist immediately and have them checked out. If light skin cancer is detected early, it can be treated effectively.

How do you properly protect yourself from the sun and thus from skin cancer?

What SPF for sun cream?

Anyone who spends time outdoors should protect themselves well from UV radiation in order to avoid skin cancer. Sun creams with a high SPF should be used. Furthermore, the lighter the skin, the easier it is to get sunburnt. These people should choose SPF 50+ and reapply regularly. Darker skin types can get by with an SPF of 15-20 and can stay in the sun a little longer without getting sunburnt.

It is important to pay attention to the UVA and UVB sun protection filters. Pharmacies stock high-quality sun protection products and offer advice on compatibility. Choose a product that is also suitable for allergy sufferers; these should not contain any fragrances or preservatives. As an alternative, use textile sun protection and do not expose yourself to the sun for too long.

How much sunscreen should I use?

An adult needs about 40 milliliters of sunscreen for the whole body. Don't skimp on this and always reapply after swimming or sweating.

What to do in case of sunburn?

Very important: get out of the sun immediately and stay in the shade. Cooling external applications are recommended for mild sunburn, such as moist compresses, cooling, nourishing and lipid-rich lotions without fragrances. Products with panthenol promote wound healing. If you don't have any products of this kind at home, a home remedy can also help: a cooling yoghurt compress also soothes the skin.

If the sunburn is more severe, a doctor should be consulted. Hospitalization is necessary for blistering burns.

Is there such a thing as a healthy tan?

Unfortunately not, because a tan on the skin is our body's first defense reaction against too much sun. Most of us know that we need to apply sunscreen, but don't do it or don't use enough. Australia proves that prevention pays off. It is the only country that has a declining incidence rate despite having a fair-skinned population.
