Basically, everyone knows that sun protection is important. However, there are always a few things that are not done properly or are forgotten.

Important tips for correct sun protection

Dermatologist Dr. Tamara Kopp from the JUVENIS beauty center in Vienna provides information about proper sun protection in an interview with Woman magazine.

Amount of the sun protection factor (SPF)

The amount of sun protection factor should be selected according to the respective skin type and the length of time spent in the sun. If you have fair skin and light hair, you only have a short self-protection time and should apply sunscreen more often or go into the shade.

Children should be lubricated with a sunscreen that has a high SPF (50+).

Creaming interval

Regular application of sunscreen would be ideal, firstly because it is not always possible to apply sunscreen perfectly to all parts of the body and secondly because activities reduce the amount of sunscreen. According to Dr. Tamara Kopp, an interval of approx. every 2 hours should be aimed for. If you do sports, you should use a waterproof sunscreen.

Children should be reapplied more often as they are usually more active. Dr. Kopp advises against using products with chemical light protection filters, as animal experiments have shown that these have a hormonal effect on cell cultures.

Additional sun protection

For children or very fair skin, textile sun protection is also recommended. Children should wear sun hats and light clothing. Sunburns in childhood in particular increase the risk of developing skin cancer later in life.

Sun cream for dry skin or allergies

Dry skin lacks the skin's own moisture and lipids (lipoids), so creams or fluid creams that provide sufficient moisture and lipoids are best suited. You should not use gels on dry skin.

Allergy sufferers should choose sun creams without fragrances and preservatives. If you are allergic to the sun, you should use a product with a very high SPF that protects not only against UVB rays but also against UVA rays. Dr. Tamara Kopp advises sun protection from the inside: Take products with a fern extract also Polypodium Leucotomos (Heliocare capsules).

Cool sprays

Cooling sprays are not generally harmful, but you run the risk of "frying" in the sun as you no longer notice the heat as clearly. The spray can also rinse off the important sun cream.

Protection against infrared rays

It has long been known that UVA and UVB rays cause damage. Recent studies have shown that certain spectra of visible light and infrared can also be harmful. UVB rays cause sunburn and damage to DNA. UVA rays are responsible for collagen degradation, skin ageing and polymorphic light dermatosis ("sun allergy") as well as Mallorca acne. Certain spectra of visible light and infrared A also appear to promote skin ageing.
